Handball is considered Iceland's national sport and is also an olympic sport. Handball is like soccer but is played with hands. It is also similar to basketball because it involves dribbling. It is illegal to double dribble, but you can walk with the ball for three steps before and after you dribble. You can only hold the ball stationary for three seconds. There are seven players playing at a time, and a maximum of twelve players that can show up to play the game.
Handball has become a large part of Icelandic culture. This has a lot to do with the fact that when Iceland's economy dived in 2008 Handball was one of the only things that people had. It gave them hope that their life wasn't completely over. Lots of people lived by the saying "I don't have money, but I have Handball."
The championship game is called the World Championship. The top five handball federations are:
